The functioning of the biofilter in a natural pool is quickly explained. It is modelled on nature, or as the saying goes: "If water flows over seven stones, it is clean again. Admittedly, in a natural pool there are a few more pebbles than seven, but the filter principle is similar. The natural pool is modelled on a flowing body of water and purification works by means of gravel filter technology. Unlike a swimming pond, no plants are used for cleaning.
Living water - the constant cycle
The water from the swimming area of the natural pool is permanently pumped through a gravel medium and thus filtered in a natural way. A microbial world (= biofilm) develops on the surface of the gravel. This biofilm extracts the nutrients contained in the water and thereby purifies it.
By absorbing the nutrients, the biofilm grows to its maximum. If the microorganisms in the filter area are saturated, no more nutrients can be extracted from the water. The first signs of this can be the clouding of the water or an excessive occurrence of filamentous algae. If this is the case, the gravel medium is simply backwashed. The "dirt" released in the process is sucked out. The world of microorganisms rebuilds itself to be able to extract nutrients from the water again.
Did you know? Holc natural pools are particularly easy to maintain and low-maintenance thanks to our patented system.
A light biofilm also forms on the walls of the natural pool basin, which helps the small ecosystem to function properly. Those who don't like it can counteract excessive growth with the pool robot. Equipped with rollers specially adapted to the wooden construction, the pool robot cleans the walls and floor.
The filter technology of the natural pool
Pumps are used to move the water through the skimmer and filter circuits. Both circuits are operated separately from each other. Water from the swimming area is pumped into the technical and filter area, cleaned there and fed back into the swimming area via nozzles. Due to the proven filter technology, the water remains clear and lively without the addition of chemical and toxic agents.
Functionality of filter technology at a glance
- Microorganisms extract nutrients from the water
- Backwash when the biofilm is saturated
- No plants for water purification
- Without chemistry
- No water change necessary
